Disasters Connected With Not Keeping Shmitta

by Rabbi Michael Unger

The book Shmittah Kehilch'sa by Rav Moshe Sternbuch lists disasters that have happened in the land of Israel after Shmittah years: The year 1889 was Shmittah. The next year the entire crop of grain was destroyed by locusts. The year 1896 was Shmittah. The next year the entire crop of grain in Israel was destroyed by mice. The year 1903 was Shmittah. The next year the population was hit with an epidemic of Cholera. The year 1910 was Shmittah. The next year most of the barns in Israel burned down. The year 1973 was Shmittah. On the Yom Kippur following the Shmittah year the Arab nations attacked Israel by surprise. That attack stopped the euphoria following the previous military victories and began a process of rethinking the entire zionist manifesto. Since then the Israelis can only argue about how fast to hand over to the Arabs land captured since 1948. My hope is that the coming year will arrive with all religious groups agreeing on a program of keeping Shmittah according to the Torah.
